People often say a particular focal length is “more flattering.” The more useful rule is simpler: camera distance changes perspective.
A face is not flat. The nose is closer to the camera than the ears, and the chin, cheeks, and forehead sit at different depths. When a phone is very close, those depth differences are large compared with the total distance, so nearer features look more prominent.
Why focal length gets blamed
A wide lens includes more of the scene; a longer lens makes the face fill more of the frame. To keep the face the same size while changing lenses, photographers usually move forward or backward.
That movement is what changes perspective. Wide-angle selfies commonly look distorted because the phone is held close, not because the lens label acts like a face filter.
What a close photo can change
A close image can make the nose look larger relative to the face, push the ears and sides visually backward, alter the jaw-to-cheek relationship, exaggerate left-right differences when the camera is off-center, and influence broad shape descriptions.
A tool may accurately describe that photograph without reconstructing the face as it would appear from a different viewing distance.
A practical setup
Place the phone on a stable surface, use a timer, and step back. Keep the camera near face height and the face near the center of the frame. Use moderate optical zoom or cropping when necessary, but avoid heavy digital enlargement.
For comparisons, record the device, camera, approximate distance, height, zoom, lighting, and expression. The goal is not to find the photograph with the preferred score; it is to reduce accidental changes.
Try it yourself
Take three images under similar light and expression: a close handheld selfie, a more distant portrait, and a still more distant image with moderate cropping.
Before checking any score, compare the nose, face width, jaw, and ears. This small experiment explains perspective more clearly than memorizing one “perfect portrait lens.”
If the results differ, none of the photographs needs to be declared the one true version of you. Real people are seen from many distances. An analysis photo is simply one controlled view.
